Introduction

On the banks of a quiet river in rural Bihar, a barefoot boy once shaped ducks and geese out of wet mud — not knowing that the same hands would one day carve monuments in sand across five continents. That boy grew into Madhurendra Kumar, one of the most decorated sand artists in the world, whose towering, intricate sculptures have carried messages of peace, conservation, and social change from the ghats of the Ganga to the halls of the British Parliament.

Born on September 5, 1994, in the border village of Barwakala, Ghorasahan, in East Champaran, Bihar — the very soil where Mahatma Gandhi lit the first flame of Satyagraha — Madhurendra Kumar has spent over two decades transforming humble, often discarded materials into art that speaks to the conscience of nations.

1. Family Background & Early Life

Madhurendra was born into a modest, financially struggling poor family of the Kanu (Halwai) community in East Champaran, Bihar.

• Father: Shivkumar Sah, a simple farmer

• Mother: Gena Devi, a homemaker skilled in regional folk singing, woollen sweater knitting, and traditional Sikki craft

• Paternal Grandfather: Late Ramchandra Sah, who supported the family by selling jhalmuri and sweets at local fairs and markets

• Paternal Grandmother: Late Phoola Devi, a homemaker

Birthplace: Barwakala village (maternal village/nanihal), Ghorasahan, East Champaran, Bihar — 182 km from Patna, 48 km from the East Champaran district headquarters, and 3 km west of Ghorasahan block office.

Ancestral village: Bijbani, Bankatwa, East Champaran — situated directly on the India-Nepal border, on the banks of the Aruna river.

By the age of five, Madhurendra was herding buffaloes and goats to support his family and working in the fields alongside his parents. At just three years old, while his grandfather tried to teach him to read at home, he preferred sketching geese and ducks in mud on a slate board. Watching this early talent, his grandfather made a quiet prophecy: "This child will grow up to become a great artist one day."

It was during these years of herding livestock along the Aruna river that Madhurendra began building homes and figures from the natural sand of the riverbank — the unknowing birth of the sand artist within him, which would go on to define his global identity.

Struggles for Education and Art

To fund his education and early artistic pursuits, Madhurendra took on an extraordinary range of work over the years:

• Sold curd door to door from the age of seven

• Wove bamboo baskets and daali-chhaitis

• Sold green vegetables in local markets

• Worked in hotels

• Sold jhalmuri at local festivals and fairs

• Painted houses, shops, signboards, and did letter-writing and wall art

• Worked as a night guard

• Stitched buttons and buttonholes at a tailoring centre

• Conducted door-to-door survey work for private companies under government-directed programs

• During college, unable to afford hostel fees, spent nearly six months sleeping on the college veranda

Because of extreme poverty, he could not initially afford colours and brushes — this is what first led him to the sand of the Bagmati's tributary, the Aruna river, as his canvas. He currently continues his artistic activities along the banks of the Ganga at Munger, Bihar.

3. The Turning Point: A President's Encouragement

In December 2005, in Bathinda, Punjab, Madhurendra created a 45-foot-high, 100-foot-long sand sculpture titled "Sarvadharma Shahadat" (The Martyrdom of All Faiths), dedicated to national unity and religious harmony — built using over 200 tons of sand with the help of 50 labourers over 15 days. This sculpture went on to be certified as the world's first-ever sand sculpture world record, recognized as the Supreme World Record Title in October 2012.

Upon seeing this work, India's then-President, Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, was moved to tears and personally told him: "Madhurendra, your art is extraordinary — one day the whole world will know your talent."

In December 2012, at the inauguration of the Bihar Science Fair, Dr. Kalam once again honoured Madhurendra — this time for a canvas painting titled "Viksit Bharat" (Developed India), depicting the importance of science in India's development from the era of ancient sages to the modern scientific age.

Madhurendra has repeatedly credited Dr. Kalam's encouragement as the single greatest force that carried him through years when his family, relatives, and society doubted his chosen path.

Madhurendra's art spans sand, clay, coal ash, cement, fiber, Plaster of Paris, wax, copper, brass, aluminium, marble, granite, plywood, thermocol, grains, and micro-carvings on green leaves, fruits, and vegetables. Selected landmark works include:

• 2004 — De-Addiction Thermocol Painting: On International De-Addiction Day, created a human skeleton painted on thermocol, adorned with empty liquor pouches, cigarette packets, and gutkha wrappers, across Dalit and Mahadalit settlements on the India-Nepal border, administering de-addiction pledges to residents.

• 2005 — Lord Shiva De-Addiction Painting: A 5-foot thermocol painting of Lord Shiva, with tobacco, bidis, and intoxicants placed beneath it, symbolizing Shiva's mythological act of consuming poison to protect the world — a call for people to give up addiction for their families and nation.

• 2005 — Sarvadharma Shahadat: The 45-ft, 100-ft sand sculpture in Bathinda, Punjab, that caught President Kalam's attention (detailed above).
